Are we keeping faith?
Today marks eleven years since the U.S. invaded Iraq.
At the time, the U.S. was already engaged in Afghanistan, and since then we’ve asked a lot of our fighting men and women and the military families that support them.
As a Captain in the Pennsylvania National Guard, I’ve been honored to witness firsthand the selfless service of our troops. I don’t need to tell you it isn’t an easy job, but they’ve answered the call.
Now, it’s time to bring the troops home. And it’s incumbent on us to ensure veterans returning to civilian life can find a good-paying job and utilize every benefit they earned through service.
But veteran unemployment remains higher than the national average, and too many face tremendous challenges when they return home. And we can do more to help.
I was proud to sponsor legislation creating a “veterans first” tax credit program, offering employers a $3,000 tax credit when they bring veterans on board. I also led the fight in the Senate to protect a service member’s status in college while they’re away on duty so service to the country never comes at the expense of a good education.
We can do more, and you can bet I’ll keep up the fight to support our veterans as Lieutenant Governor.
To the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines who served – thank you.
